i’ve been a member of PETA for a few years now and they were the ones who introduced me to the world of animal testing. before PETA, i had no idea what it even was. after reading into it and looking up some information, i came to the conclusion that i was going to pledge to be cruelty free. so, for the last year and a bit, i’ve been using products that have not been tested on animals. if you’d like, i’d love it if you would join me - give this a read and see what going cruelty free will do for you (before i continue, this is speaking about cosmetic/household animal testing, not medical):
first off, what is animal testing? today, hundreds of thousands of animals are used for cosmetic and household product tests. these animals include (but are not limited to): dogs, rabbits, pigs, mice, rats, guinea-pigs, fish and birds. many tests are carried out and these include: tests for skin or eye irritation, skin sensitisation (allergy), toxicity (poisoning), mutagenicity (genetic damage), teratogencity (birth defects), carcinogenicity (causing cancer), embryonic or fetal genetic damage and toxicokinetics (to study the absorption, metabolism, distribution and excretion of the substance). source: gocrueltyfree
is it necessary? everyone has their own opinion, in my eyes, it most definitely is not. there are tens of thousands of products (and product combinations) that have been deemed safe for human use already, plus, there are a variety of alternatives to testing directly on animals. there are a large handful of cruelty free companies that manage to produce high end, quality products without animal testing.
so, what can you do?
pledge to go cruelty free for one week. if you don’t want to dive head first into it, that’s perfectly fine! take one week and try to purchase only products that have not been tested on animals. you can use PETAs CRUELTY FREE PRODUCTS guide to help you day to day. it comes in a pdf which you can print off, or you can order one online (free!) and have it delivered to your door! if at the end of the week, you want to go back to your normal routine, by all means. but if you love the lifestyle and free great about it, keep on going!
pick your favourite cruelty free brands and stick to them. for me, they include MAC, Urban Decay, Organix and Hard Candy (plus a whole lot more). it’s easier to continue the lifestyle if you find brands and certain products you like and gradually add them into your routine. i replaced my herbal essences shampoo with organix and tresemme!
don’t be afraid to e-mail a company and ask what their policy is. but be careful, sometimes they beat around the bush with the “but …” or watch our for companies that tell you that they don’t test on animals, but they use products that have been tested on animals.
spread the word. it’s easier to go at something together, so challenge your friends to try and go cruelty free with you for one week. and yes, it’s okay to slip up! consider it your lesson learned, now you know that product has been tested on animals and you most likely won’t use it again.
educate. read up on the topic. get to know what really happens in cosmetic and household animal testing. you can read gocrueltyfree.org’s animal testing faq or you can learn from PETAs caring consumer 101 guide, which will give you insight into the world of animal testing, alternatives and how you can avoid products that have been tested on animals.
lastly, take the pledge. if you’re ready to make it a lifestyle, head over to PETA and sign the PLEDGE TO BE CRUELTY FREE.
one last thing, for those who would like a pocket guide as to which products are and are not tested on animals, PETA has an app called BE NICE TO BUNNIES (BNB) in the AppStore for 2.99$ (i really recommend this for those who have 100% chosen to make this a lifestyle, if you’re just starting out, PETA has a printable document or an online search which is free) which will tell you over 1000 products tested and not tested on animals. alternatively, CRUELTY FREE (THE LEAPING BUNNY) has a free app that will tell you which products to pick, both available to android and iphone!
